Race Report: Star New Year Head

Updated: May 22, 2020

Race Report by Vice Captain, Rachel Kornberg

Fifteen Weybridge crews went off in search of a river without red boards, so ventured to Bedford to race, Sunday January 12th at the Star New Year Head 2020.

Twelve of the crews were Juniors, many starved of both water time and any racing for all of the head season so far, but who have diligently put in the work, week in, week out on the ergo. An occasional session in the Community rowing tank helped sharpen technique too - and it paid off.

It was cold, windy with strong stream at Bedford. The 1950-metre course with its 7 bridges was not without its challenges! Weybridge crews came through though: 6 took home some pots or medals as well as a few other close runners up.

Weybridge have a good day out: Well done to all!

Our first win came from the J14 octo (8x+), hastily assembled after the J13 boys’ quad oppo withdrew on the event closing deadline, leaving our youngest boys without a race. One session in the tank, a great attitude and the boys J13/J14 crew cruised down the course looking very much rehearsed. Congrats to Piers, Archie, Bryn, Daniel, Luca, Ethan, Ben Ja, Henry, and cox Mia:

This was followed by wins for the WJ15.4x+ (Lydia, Jaz, Lola R, Eva, cox: Katie), the Op.4+ (Max, Louis, Tim, Pete C, cox: Lola M), J18.2- (Louis, Tim), W.MasE.2- (Rachel, Jayne) and W.MasF.4x- (racing 'E' - Anne, Rachel, Jayne, Jacqui). Kez and Nick rowed good races in their WJ15.1x and J15.1x, both coming in as runners up, as did the boys J14.4x+.

Well done to all: a good day out with lots to keep us all motivated to train even harder for next time. Many thanks to Keith for towing the trailer, to Matt for keeping order all day at Star, to the Junior coaching team for keeping the Juniors’ noses to the ergs through the last few months and to 'Faster Masters Rowing' for their support to our Masters’ crews.
